Toyota MR-2 Used Car Review

In 1984 it went into production and it was available as a coupe and T-bar. The Mk1 lasted until 1990, when the larger Mk2 was introduced. This lasted until 2000, when our focus, the Mk3, was introduced and it signified a somewhat back to basics approach similar to that of the Mk1. It was completely different to the Mk2, and out went the pop-up headlights and it had a hint of Porsche Boxster about the front end. The slightly controversial looks were not to everyone?s taste, but there was no denying it?s compact dimensions and mid-engined configuration nodded to the ?less is more?, driver-focussed, school of thinking.

Toyota MR-2 Performance There is only one engine choice and one state of tune for the Mk3. It has Toyota?s 1.8 litre, high-tech VVTi engine also found in the Celica and Corolla. It makes a 140bhp and 127lb ft of torque. On first glance this is a fairly modest output until you look at the kerb weight: just 975kg. The MR2 will go from 0-60 of just 7.6sec and a top speed of 127mph. It?s main used car rivals in this sector also provide similar performance: MGF (0-60 7.4sec), MX-5 (0-60 8.2sec). This engine requires lots of revs to get the best out of it however, with peak torque arriving high up the rev range. Thankfully due to low weight, it can still provide a certain amount of flexibility when required, but to be honest a good torquey diesel can show it a clean pair of heels in not-so-perfect conditions.

However, the MR2 has a fine handling balance and compared to rivals such as the MGF and MX-5 is almost uncompromising. But don?t let that put you off; this is a fun and communicative car. The steering is excellent; in terms of feel, it runs the MX-5 close enough. With its mid-engined configuration, it has a good 50:50 weight distribution making it a very good drive. There are two gearbox options with this car: A five or six speed manual and also a five or six speed sequential manual gearbox. The 5-speed sequential/manual gearboxes were available from 2000-2003 and 6-speed options replaced them thereafter. The manual gearbox is a typical Japanese strength; its slick gear selection suits the revvy nature of the car, but the SMT sequential with steering wheel shift buttons is also worth a look. The manual however is recommended. Power steering is not standard and was available as an extra. Those wanting the full sports car experience may decide that it?s not essential.

Toyota MR-2 Comfort, Equipment and Specification The MR2 adds to it?s pure sports car concept with an extremely driver orientated interior. There?s a good driving position and unusually for these types of car, enough room for the taller driver, which the MX-5 falls short. It has a manual folding roof and is very easy to operate, should there be a sudden downpour. The sports seats are comfortable and the cockpit has a very cosy feeling. It has a CD player as standard and optional extras worth looking out for include leather trim, power steering, remote central locking, electric windows and air conditioning. As you can see this car is minimalist, and a Mazda MX-5 may be easier to live with for some, but the serious lack of stowage space is alarming. There is practically nothing. All it has are a few tiny storage areas, which to be honest, cannot hold anything substantial. Like a proper sports car, then. There are no electronic aids either; the only limiting factor is your disciplined right foot. Toyota MR-2 Conclusions? The MR2?s looks divide opinion, but there?s no denying that this an extremely well built, uncompromising, reliable roadster. It?s not practical, but that?s not the point. Toyota tries to provide a purist experience and in some ways it succeeded. It provided a car, which ticked every box in the ?what makes a lightweight sports car? list. Used priced start a dealer around £7000, for a 2000 model, although it may be worth shopping around private or independents where around £6000 will see you in an early 5-speed model. Worth a look and test drive, if this is your market.

Toyota MR-2...So what?s good?

Lovely, revvy VVTi engine. Totally suits this car. It handles very well, but is less forgiving than MX-5. But once you get it right, rewarding. Due to its lightweight it can return 38mpg when driven frugally. It?s a Toyota, so it will be reliable. Despite what your opinions are on the looks, it doesn?t seem to have aged. ?And what?s bad? Can be tiresome on long journeys, and it has virtually no practicality and the VVTi isn?t the most flexible of powerplants, requires gearchange to get the best and in adverse weather can limit your progress. Standard equipment scarce.
